You can also set more than two Regions of Interest (RoIs) for your images in Camera Raw. Previously, you could only set two or three regions. For example, you can set two RoIs for a specific subject and one for the background. You can now set up to nine regions (see Fig. 1.4).

If you have multiple images open at once, you can use the new multiscreen panels in the Files tab to change them instantly with a single click. The panel at left in Fig. 1.5 shows three images, but you can have up to 10. (You can set that limit in the Options window.)

You can now add a layer for any color location on your image. Go to Image > Adjustments > Create a Layer. In the Create Layer dialog box, you can use the up and down arrow buttons to change the color of the layer, move it to a location, and drag it to a desired location on your image.

You can now set the Adjustment Layer Mask in the Adjustments > Adjustment Layers window to display the pixels affected by the mask. You can use the Lock and Unlock buttons to lock a mask layer and overlay other adjustments on it. You can then use the Lasso tool to select the area you want to be masked by the mask.

You can now export an image with no background, and you can save the background as a new image. The Slices panel is also improved. You can now filter the image slices by choosing one or more slices in the options, and then by using the up and down arrow buttons in the panel to choose slices you want to hide or show. You can also use the scroll wheel to show or hide slices.

Enhanced white point and black point sliders. You can now use the white point sliders to open a window that you can use to modify the white point of your image. Select the white point slider, and click the drop-down arrow button to select between 10 and 2000. You can then use the left and right arrow buttons in the gray area of the dialog box to select a value.

Drew Imre: I’m not really sure how to clarify this, but a couple of things. First, I’ll say that we’ve done a significant amount of work in this version to make it better. It is not “unveiled”; rather, it’s a culmination of a lot of work by us and many of our colleagues. There were a few other new versions released but they didn’t get much traction — they were, essentially, minor enhancements. And by “new”, you really mean “only minor updates”. So, yeah, it’s better than other versions, but we didn’t do it for the sake of novelty.

As to what it is, it’s a significant improvement on previous versions. There are a number of new features (including some we didn’t mention in the blog). And, as you can imagine, there are a lot of changes to the way the raw-processing controls are designed, and how certain functions work, etc. We haven’t had a chance to release an update to ACR in nine months or so, so we’ve had quite a bit of time to implement all these changes. I’d like to say that the engineers were working on it every single day, but that’s not true; the engineering team is very small, and there are only so many hours in a day. I’d like to say that there are new things, etc. but the truth is that we have a lot of complaints. People don’t like change; it’s part of life.

I’ll try to come up with something on the community site to clarify some of this. But, from the outside, it seems like ACR has become a little bit like OSX — it has a UI that’s significantly different than the old, classic UI. I’ve tried to explain this in this blog, and in the new FAQ on the site. But if you don’t like the new way, if you don’t like change, and if the old ACR is what you prefer, you can keep it.

One of the most popular features of Adobe Camera Raw is the ability to set white balance. As Morrison points out, you can set white balance in ACR. When you open an image youre no longer able to adjust the white balance. If you re-open the image and lose all your settings, you cant just turn them back on like you can in Lightroom.

Another great example of the limitations of ACR is that the highlight and shadow sliders are locked in. At a minimum, in ACR, you can’t move an image horizontally or vertically. You can only zoom in.

When you want to make a change to an image in Lightroom, you can turn on the Smart Preview tool, a point and click preview of the image as it was on the camera. If you arent in Lightroom, you can use the Shared Cache feature to preview your image on another computer, or open the image in Photoshop and view it there.

I thought since ACR cant adjust the white balance of these files, I would have to open them in Lightroom, find their white balance, and then open them in ACR and adjust those settings. I did this several times. I ended up with an image that was heavily processed in Lightroom and all of its sliders were off. All of a sudden, I had a weird space/bubble/flare in the images. 

With magic lantern, I shot these images on 35mm film. It was really hard to make them look good. For instance, one of the settings you can adjust with ACR to make an image look sharp is to turn the sharpening slider to high, which will make the image super sharp. But that requires a lot of processing on the file to make it look sharp. And in ACR, as noted above, you cant edit the sharpening in the developed file.

Whats important about working with RAW files? First of all, RAW file sizes are much larger than JPEGs. The quality of the image on a JPEG file is dependent on the image size and the amount of quality control settings applied to the file. A JPEGs size in megabytes means that in high resolution images, there could be a few hundred megabytes of file size. A RAW file in the same size, resolution, and quality could be anywhere from 16 to 60 times that size.

Although a RAW file is a great opportunity for image editing, a JPEG (or any other image format) can still take up a lot of data. Thats why we usually download multiple JPEGS to our social media accounts. A photo on a social network, where the image is a small thumbnail is always displayed in a format optimized for that small display. So your image cant take up the RAM memory inside the computer, which could cause your system to run slowly or even crash. So to make sure it doesnt take up too much memory, theres a tradeoff. A high quality image loses image quality.

Camera RAW 14.5 will also give you the ability to make common and useful image adjustments that many photographers overlook. Another of the reasons RAW files are so important is that they are one of the only ways to get really good color, contrast, and sharpening with ease. The RAW converter will also correct lens artifacts, improve the image color balance, adjust for exposure, sharpen, restore, and remove noise, and sharpen details.

One of the greatest strengths of a RAW file is that they include the original data and arent ever straightened. That means, if you shoot an image in what Adobe calls “mirror mode,” the camera may not be able to properly straighten all of the lines. Once you’ve applied a different lens, you’ll see a large preview of your image in the left side of the screen. To apply any adjustments you’ve created in Adobe Camera Raw to this image, open your image in Photoshop Elements by pressing the New button and selecting Use Adobe Camera Raw Adjustments. If you prefer, you can also press Command+E.

You’ll see this screen with the name of the lens applied to your image. If you’ve used Photoshop Elements before, then you know that you have many fine-tuning tools in the adjustment and filter menus. By default, Adobe Camera Raw hides the toolbars so you can work in the full screen mode. However, if you want to get back to your toolbars, you can do so by pressing Command+T. Adobe Camera Raw 14.5 is the latest version of its Photoshop-alike RAW processing application, and it provides a lot of new features, according to the Adobe website. The highlights are likely to be RAW support for the iPhone and iPad, improved support for 5K video, and a refreshed look.

Since none of the previous versions of ACR can run natively on the iPad (no matter how many third-party apps that claim to do it), it was very convenient that ACR now actually supports the full-on Apple A7 chip, which is the main CPU in the iPad 5.

I want to start by saying I’ve never worked with, or used Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw before. I’ve tried in the past, but never really got around to it. I’m a Lightroom user and usually don’t stray from that, until I need to convert the files to other programs, process a higher resolution file, or as a last resort, scan them to a.pdf file. Lightroom is the only program I can bring to the table that I trust 100% to do what I need it to do and I’ve been happy with it.

There are a lot of these comparing, but the short and sweet of it, so to speak, is; what does it do, and how does it do it? The DPP folks have succeeded in creating a new angle of support for Photoshop users. So, without further ado, let’s see how this plays out for users who don’t want to make the jump to Lightroom.

To get started, you’ll need an actual copy of Camera Raw > 14.5 (14.6 is not supported yet), the optional install CD, and the original RAW files. If you’re following, you should have the first three parts of the course in place.
