No, a separate recorder program is a big plus, and the Pro Tools mixer now offers a 4th recording track that is activated by tapping +9 (-9dB) on the front panel. This is rather useful for using the mixer as a simple 4-track recorder, and even offering stereo I/O in mono mode. Obviously, this is a rough concept for a mixer, not to mention that there are many more uses for recording which are not supported by the present mixer version.

Editing is not crippled either. Following the patchwork quality of Pro Toolss synths, Avid introduced a wave editor that uses a similar patchwork approach. Editing options are rather limited, like selecting, splitting and reversing individual waveforms.

Pro Tools 2018.7 is subtitled “New Version,” and that’s an apt description of the general feel. Avid has had a hard time coming up with a version number scheme that isn’t driven by geographic region and that doesn’t muddle the history of the product line. The typical PT1-9, PT10-19, and PT20-29 number scheme feels odd, as those areas tend to be the most popular versions of the product.

What is Avid Pro Tools good for?

When I first started recording and editing with Pro Tools, I’d originally been quite excited about the ‘Digital Audio Workstation’ tag, which I was used to seeing on the official Pro Tools website. But as it turns out, the most that we can reasonably expect from Pro Tools is to allow you to record audio, and play it back. Providing you have a Mac with the very latest (and admittedly very sweet) version of the software, you can record and playback all the uncompressed and deinterleaved SoundPackages you want, without any of the usual compression, limiting, or effect processing. Provided your Mac can handle it, you can then use Pro Tools to take those sessions and edit them, add automation, and possibly drag them into any kind of MIDI mapping or synth application. As I think I mentioned before, though, if you’ve been recording in SoundPackages format you’re probably in for an interesting time if you’re used to using the traditional.wav format. Just remember that you have to save your session in whatever format you want to play back, and then you can start working on it as usual.

For’straight’ multitrack recording, Pro Tools is adequate. I’m not a multitrack editor by trade, so I’m very much a mono-man who doesn’t tend to get much beyond placing the various tracks into the outboard rack. I could work with Pro Tools for many years without getting beyond this stage, although I could already imagine the trouble my son would have when he got the full version. However, being able to capture audio without the usual lossy compression, processing, and de-interleaving that results in a ‘compressed’ sound is handy, and gives me the opportunity to record audio without having to deal with any of the other codecs or file formats I’ve come to know so well (perhaps I should have been a musician). With Pro Tools I can use a plethora of high quality and affordable outboard plug-ins to (a) add effects and processing, (b) key-track or sequence-track audio, or (c) even use VSTs to record a lot of audio in one pass. And for playback, Pro Tools also has a similar range of options, although again I have fewer audio apps and plug-ins to play with.
