The 64-bit support for OSX in Cubase 12 is welcome for those of us who need to get work done. The 64-bit compatibility with large projects and multisite mixing is also worth mentioning. The fact that Apple only permits apps that only use extensions from its own App Store means that the (for now) limited number of workflow features available can be updated to run on 64-bit straight from Cubase. The only caveat to this is that some third-party sound libraries need to be changed as well. Cubase 12 also works well on Windows; Ive been using it for most of my work over the last year and have found it quite stable (and a big improvement over previous versions).

I love Cubase! It is the best daw I’ve tried on a PC. I have been using Cubase for about 12 years now. I tried Ableton but I couldn’t get into it. I tried Pro Tools, I liked it but I couldn’t get the file structure down and it seemed like it was too much hard work compared to Cubase. I bought Cubase and it’s free. I recently created a gateway computer for a lot of music making in the loft space. It has an M-Audio Studio X series (almost 5 years ago) and the corresponding Cubase (2002) and some old software, like Samplitude. I used the gateway because the new computers did not have enough space for a full surround sound setup. I now have a better setup with the new computers in the main house. The studios are super usable, but the connection to the main system is bit weird. One computer is connected to the gateway via it’s USB, while the other computers are connected to the gateway via their audio I/O. That’s how it was always done, but now I can’t get the connection between the apps to work. I’ve created a new session with a USB keyboard, but I can not get anything to play (any instrument, MIDI, wave file, etc). I can open any folder and play the songs that are in there, so it seems to be an issue with the audio I/O. So in some ways I need your help, because I do not know what to look for. I’ve tried everything I can think of. Another issue with the M-Audio Studio X, is that the reset button is really slow to reset. If you have a longer setup, this means you can’t just hit the reset button, you have to take it out and plug it back in.

I actually like it. From the little Ive seen of it, it seems to be lean and mean with very little to go wrong. Hopefully that also means easy to upgrade. You can easily add functions to C-Track or just add even more tracks with CEDEC. Theres also a huge community with information and plugins to help those who like to tinker. Ive seen some very impressive stuff as well as a few bugs, but nothing that really doesnt work. As long as its not beyond their upgrade ability, I think its OK. Its also compatible with VST and AU hostings. This means that you dont have to run Cubase in VST or AU format, you can use other hostings that work with those formats.
