We identified H. hypotelestes and P. titylus as the predominant species using temples, representing two or more bat species that forage in different prey types. We found many positive responses from temple authorities who permit bats in their temples, such as eliminating agricultural pests, as an active reason for their presence, and providing status symbols of successful property management. Ptitylus is an architectural bat and uses temple buildings as its only daily roost, with no evidence of them using forest foraging. We rarely found evidence of H.hypotelestes roosting in caves, but noticed their presence at one temple located in a forest. H.hypotelestes was commonly found by people visiting temples. We discuss this species in more detail in section Discussion and Conclusions.

While temples are culturally important, they have been considered expendable by society at large. However, as we show here, humans need temples to drive a large number of bats out of their current roost. Indeed, the inherent potential of the space is being used and produced with the intent to provide public value, i.e. people using the bat. Across all species, there is a need to reduce the bat density above a specified threshold. We found that when the density of bats is above 10 individuals, the cost-benefit ratio is negative, i.e. an increased cost of non-bat-related actions outweighs an increased benefit from protecting bat roosting areas. On the other hand, the cost-benefit ratio changes slightly below this threshold, indicating that bats are important for the society at large. For example, reducing the density of bats by 30% leads to an increase in gross domestic product of 41.5% in the plains and 50% in the hills, and reduces the number of injuries to 0.4 million people in the plains and to 10,000 people in the hills. Therefore, bats appear to be an important factor for human livelihood in temple areas. This is in line with the notion that the use of temple space by bats can stabilize environment and reduce the impact of bat-borne zoonotic diseases on human health [ 54 ].

Our study shows that temples of Tamil Nadu are important bat habitats. Bats provide important services, including pollination, pest control, food for livestock and fish, reduction of noise and an important source of income in the form of temple visitors and recitation of religious scripts. Some bat species are being hunted by humans for their products and/or as pests. Our results suggest that such hunting could be redirected towards helping bats and preserving their habitats.

The exact reasons why different species select temples as roosting sites are still unclear, but several hypotheses can be made. Generally, caves are known to have higher bat densities and that bats are more aggregated in such locations [ 55 ]. Our study cannot determine whether bats prefer to roost in temples for their aggregation, but it is obvious that if such segregation occurs in two different habitats, there must be a mechanism causing this segregation. We hypothesize that bats might be using temples to find safe places to roost.

This is because of the way virusesevolveand mutate with each new host infected, giving rise to mutants with improved genetic survival and offensive skills. Fruit bats’ smaller cousin horseshoe bats have been identified as a potential coronavirus reservoir an animal population foundto harbor the virus. These animals, along with scaly-skinned mammals called pangolins, may have spread it to humans but the problem is, they, or another unknown animal, may only be an intermediary, leaving a direct viral progenitor stillat large.

Vampire bats can feed on almost any type of animal. According to Gerald Carter, a vampire-bat scientist with Smithsonians Tropical Research Institute, they bite porcupines, armadillos, snakes, sea lions and even penguins. But for the most part, they stick to livestock and birds. The common vampire bat tends to feed off mammals like cows, pigs and horses, while white-winged and hairy-legged vampire bats primarily feed on birds like sleeping chickens.

Bat: An animal with a great sense of smell, which they use to find food, navigate by, and keep themselves safe. Because they have very sensitive eyes, they are usually active by day. By night, they can become nocturnal. They love to eat. They store a great deal of fat in their kidneys to keep warm at night. Their fur is important in helping them feel like one with the environment. By hanging upside down, the bats can look down on the ground below. [BBC]

Once upon a time I always thought a bat was some kind of alien with its crazy wings and its weird no-climb hunting methods, but bats are 100% mammals. They are covered in hair and don’t fly – they glide using special muscles in their wings to propel themselves. Their wings are usually folded against their bodies while they travel, making them look very similar to their own flightless relatives, the birds.

9. The longest-living bat is 41 years old. Its said that the smaller the animal, the shorter its lifespan, but bats break that rule of longevity. Although most bats live less than 20 years in the wild, scientists have documented six species that life more than 30 years. In 2006, a tiny bat from Siberia set the world record at 41 years.

Fruit bats, also known as megabats for their larger body size, help support biodiversity by spreading seeds from the fruit they consume. These bats eat the flesh of the fruit while spitting out most of the seeds and pulp. Because they also carry the fruit back to their roost to consume it, they redistribute the seeds, helping to plant more trees.

There are many negative misconceptions about bats, but these tiny mammals perform several integral roles in their ecosystems. They eat pesky insects, pollinate plants, spread seeds, and fertilize crops. Though bats can occasionally present a health risk to humans, bats provide an overall net good for our environment and are worth protecting.

MOI or Mass Moment of Inertia is a measurement of bat swing weight. This quantifies how difficult it is to swing a bat. The industry often refers to this as things like End Load or Balanced but those words have been overused to the point of meaninglessness. We measure the actual swing weights of each bat we test using the industry-standard pendulum period, balance point, and scale weight. You can read more about that here .
