I now have a new tablet, an Asus C302CA/CW from the U.S. and I use a vintage scanner (Doxie Portable 5) from Europe. I tried Hamricks software as well as the free one from Brother and the results are outstanding. In the end I had to spend $500 on the scanner which is twice the price of VueScan, but it has all the features, is better quality and provides excellent software that works with any Linux or Mac laptop. Ive used VueScan on my Mac, but its drivers are very suspect. The end result with the C302CA from Brother was completely professional. The scan resolution was great, although the Paper mode was far too coarse.

I have been using VueScan for the last 6 years. I just upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 and was willing to give Hamrick a try to see if they worked with the new OS. So I purchased a VueScan Studio at a price that is comparable to that of a product that does not seem to work well with new OSX. After 6 weeks of trying to get the software to work, it suddenly started working. First I had to update the software on a Windows 10 machine that I use for scanning. (No one from the software company has contacted me.) I downloaded the final production version of the software that was missing the updated D3FAR module that they advertised on their website. I then installed the new VueScan Studio on my Mac. I have an old Epson VX-20, and that is not supported by the software. So I have been using the free Preview software. This software is also supplied by Hamrick and it works with my scanner. Hamrick is providing the scanner driver for free. I find this approach works well for me, Hamrick needs to update their studio software for Mac as well, I will not buy this software again.

While it’s true that both VueScan and SilverFast support importing and exporting into and from PDFs, the former in a much more flexible way. You can choose your export format and destination and each document you import from a PDF is individually tagged as such, making it easy to find and reuse scans that are similar to ones you’ve already done.
